Member search isn't working properly

Some of our members seem invisible to the Search function. They don't show up when searching either their first or last names, even though other people with the name show up in the resulting list.
A search for Michael shows 6 profiles, but there are 7 members named Michael, And a search for the missing Michael based on his last name does not show him.
Likewise, a search for Beth does not return the only member with that name, but does return an Elizabeth.
Apparently there are other members missing from the search too, based on others' reports.
Any ideas?

Hellooooo....
Any help on this? I don't see any mention of a ticket being opened after a couple of weeks now.
We're trying to grow a professional development group, and people are getting frustrated with the search not working.
Is there some other place I should look for help?

Bill, sorry I missed replying earlier -- I did open a ticket when you reported this, #1978. Our technical staff will work to resolve this as soon as possible. My first guess is that some of your more recent content isn't being indexed, but I'm not certain. We'll keep you posted here and/or from our support mailbox.
Bill -- you should now find Search responding more consistently, and new content indexed within minutes of being added. Ticket #1978 is now closed.
Recent system-wide queuing improvements we implemented should also help prevent this from happening again in the future.
